Lindsey and Michael, a young married couple, were determined to begin their lives together on solid financial footing. Both Lindsey and Michael opened IDAs and began saving diligently for their first home. Using their income tax refunds and saving each month, they each contributed $2,000 to their IDA accounts. In just a few months, their savings and matching funds produced $12,000 for a down payment for a home. They have now moved in and are busy working on renovations – learning a whole new set of skills!

Graduating and Focusing on Her Goals

Sara was in graduate school at UAB when she began volunteering with United Way of Central Alabama’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. She learned about the Individual Development Account through her volunteer work. She enrolled in the program to help cover graduate school expenses which helped her finish her degree sooner and with less debt. She obtained her degree and is now employed in her field. She is a strong proponet of United Way and is telling her friends about the IDA program.

Going for a Nursing Degree

Barry was working at a hospital and for years had dreamed of getting a degree in nursing. Through his employer, Barry learned about the Individual Development Account program that could provide funding to pay for his educational expenses. As Barry began to save, he saw his savings matched and his dreams of nursing school became a reality. Barry received his degree and now not only is practicing in his chosen field was able to reach his dream without accumulating debt.

A Home of Her Own

Tekeisha Meecheam lives in Eutaw, in Greene County, and is now a proud home owner thanks to United Way’s Individual Development Account Program. After enrolling in the program, Tekeisha saw her savings grow and learned the financial skills necessary to buy and sustain a home. Tekeisha celebrated with a ribbon cutting and is now a role model inspiring others in her community to reach for their dreams.
